Location
Rock Cottage sits between Mawgan and Gear Bridge on a promontory overlooking the upper reaches of the Helford River on two sides. There are no other dwellings in view and its magnificent scenery has not changed in centuries!
The village is a short but fairly steep walk from the cottage and has The Ship Inn with its popular restaurant, a 12c church and the very useful Mawgan Stores. In the opposite direction, after crossing the ancient Gear Bridge and via St Martin, are routes to Frenchman's Creek, Tremayne Quay, Manaccan, Gillan and St Anthony. At Helford is the Sailing Club, the Shipwrights Arms and the foot ferry crossing to Helford Passage, Durgan and Trebah Gardens.
The Stannary town of Helston is a short car ride of ten minutes and has many independent shops. Flora Day takes place in early May each year and is well worth a visit. There are a few traditional pubs including the late medieval Blue Anchor, with its skittle alley and home brewed Spingo ales. As well as the boating lake and cafe, there is a cinema, and indoor swimming pool at the sports centre. On the outskirts are Tesco's, Sainsbury's and Lidl's supermarkets plus petrol stations and places to eat.
